Departure Mono is Helena Zhang's free pixel monospace font, drawn to evoke airport split-flap boards and early terminal displays. Its site plays the whole fantasy straight, interface and all.

The placard

A typeface shown as a place: the pixel face is presented through boarding-pass ephemera, terminal readouts and departure-board theatrics, so you meet the type already doing the jobs it was drawn for. The craft is in the total commitment — cursor, layout, microcopy all speak the same retro-terminal dialect without tipping into kitsch. Free fonts rarely get sites this considered; this one out-dresses most commercial releases, and the font’s downloads show it worked.
